Local Business Recycles Wedding Dresses and Supports Charity

BRIDES FOR A CAUSE EVENT
by Erica J Mitchell

I was given the opportunity to photograph an on tour special event hosted by Bride for a Cause. An organization that operates a circular wedding dress system where you can donate your wedding dress or purchase a once worn wedding at a fraction of the price. Half of the purchase supports the continuing efforts of Brides for a Cause to travel the dresses and the other half is sent to charity to help couples facing terminal illnesses create the wedding of their dreams.

Summer Skin Fundraising Event

I had the opportunity to document Summer Kramer’s fundraising event held at Union Pine. It was a wonderful party with a silent auction, raffle and plenty of delectable food catered by Laurelhurst Market. All proceeds from the bar were donated toward to charity for skin cancer. Summer developed a clothing line that she could wear. After surviving skin cancer it was important for her clothing to protect her skin. All items are made with a SPF of 50 and made in the USA.

ASMP/Oregon Portland Squared 2013

ASMP/Oregon Portland Squared Photography Community Event

This past weekend I participated in the 2nd annual ASMP/Oregon Portland Squared Community Event. The first day the 70 registered photographers were randomly assigned one of 70 squares to shoot and bring back the following day for editing, submission and live judging. There were 7 categories each photographer could photograph and submit, with a total of 5 entries per person allowed. A local photography studio, Studio 3, was our hangout both days. It was so cool to socially interact with the photography community of Portland. I met a bunch of really neat people and I look forward to future collaborations!

It was thrilling to watch the judges process all the images people took in a 24 hour period for the awards. And It was educational to view everyone’s photographic style and approach. Each images was so unique and had visual integrity. I received Honorable Mention in Best Lensbaby Image Category and Honorable Mention in Best Fine Art/Abstract Image Category.

I’m already looking forward to next year!

Sneak Peek! The Lingua Franca Project

I had the wonderful opportunity to document a benefit show for the newly launched Portland based non-profit organization by Katelyn Convery called The Lingua Franca Project, in partnership with ABC for Life.

I met founder Katelyn Convery in the summer of 2011 as she was preparing to make the move to Cape Town, South Africa from Portland, Oregon. Katelyn has become deeply involved with a number of non-profit organizations such as ABC for Life utilizing her efforts to promote and support programs in education, literacy, self enrichment and self-development.

As a musician, Katelyn, her brother and close friend performed for the attendees at the Purest Cafe located on SW Ash Street in downtown Portland. All donations are deposited to the Lingua Franca Project and will help provide more space for students and teachers.

Below is a sneak peek photograph from the musical performance. More images to come!
